The recent cancellation of the $12.5 billion Central Queensland Hydrogen Project (CQ-H2) has sent ripples through the region's energy sector. Spearheaded by state-owned Stanwell Corporation, the ambitious project aimed to transform Gladstone into a global leader in green hydrogen, with plans to produce up to 800 tonnes of hydrogen per day by the 2030s for export to Japan and Singapore.

So, what went wrong?

A mix of escalating costs, the exit of key commercial partners, and a lack of cohesive government support led Stanwell to formally withdraw in June 2025, putting an end to the project.

While the announcement may raise short-term concerns, it's far from a death knell for Gladstone's growth. In fact, this development offers savvy investors a chance to reassess and re-position.

Why Gladstone Still Matters

Gladstone remains a strategic investment location thanks to its well-established port, industrial base, and highly skilled workforce. Importantly, there is still strong momentum in infrastructure development and energy innovation:

Hydrogen Park Gladstone - This smaller-scale project continues to operate, producing renewable hydrogen to decarbonise local gas networks. It keeps Gladstone on the hydrogen map and maintains investor interest in clean energy infrastructure.
Major Infrastructure Spend - The Gladstone Regional Council's 2025/26 budget includes $105 million in capital expenditure, reinforcing the city's commitment to future-proofing its infrastructure:
$51.9M for water and wastewater upgrades
$17.7M for roads and drainage improvements
$10.88M for sport and recreation projects
$5.5M for bridge upgrades
$2.3M for waste disposal facilities
$1.2M for footpath and cycle infrastructure

These investments not only support population and industrial growth but signal long-term confidence in the region.

What This Means for Commercial Investors

Now is the time to pivot strategically. With the large-scale hydrogen initiative off the table (for now), investors should focus on assets that service Gladstone's ongoing infrastructure development, logistics, manufacturing, and small-to-medium enterprise growth.
