Ultrasound image may reveal any, or all, of the following
features:
- Empty uterus with thickened endometrium,
more than 10 mm
- Sometimes there is a small sac within the uterus that looks like a
gestational sac but this is smaller than expected and often has
irregular borders. It is called a pseudo-gestational
sac
- Adnexal mass – this may look
like a gestational sac but often just looks like a tumour
- In less than 5% of cases, the pregnancy is alive and you
may detect a heartbeat
- There may be fluid in the space behind the uterus (the pouch of
Douglas) or, more generally, if the tube has ruptured. The fluid is
mostly blood and therefore may contain echoes, representing blood clot.
In this transverse view of the pelvis, the uterus is almost surrounded
by blood clot
