Both of these signs are visible.
This is a baby with polyhydramnios and features of fluid retention within the fetus – known as hydrops. This is usually a sign of heart failure in the fetus and can be the result of infection, anaemias and some tumours of the fetus and the placenta, as well as abnormalities of the fetal heart rate.
The left image shows the abnormal fetus from our case - the subcutaneous thickening can be clearly seen. The right images shows a normal fetal head for comparison - there is normal appearance of the subcutaneous layer.
